UN Security Council approves tough new sanctions on North Korea

The UN Security Council unanimously passed a 15-member resolution imposing tough new sanctions on North Korea that would deprive it of annual revenues of $ 1 billion.

This new package of sanctions is seen as a response to Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic programs, a success for the United States that has persuaded China and Russia not to use the veto.

Resolution No. 2371 of Pyongyang prohibits export revenues, including iron, coal and fishing, to $ 1 billion.

The US president praised the unanimous UN Security Council resolution, saying sanctions would have "a very big financial impact."

"It is the biggest package of economic sanctions against North Korea," Trump said on Twitter.

It was the first time sanctions against Pyongyang had been imposed by the United States since Donald Trump took office early this year.

The resolution also forbids the establishment of any new joint venture between North Korean and foreign companies and stops any further investment in existing companies and prevents North Korea from increasing its shares of overseas workers.

North Korean ships, which violate UN resolutions, would be barred from docking in all countries, and North Korea's foreign trade bank, which manages foreign-currency trading, would be added to the list of entities freezing its assets, the resolution said.

North Korea launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile on National Day. The other missile, launched at the end of July, raised concern about Pyongyang's ability to develop missiles capable of hitting the US mainland.

Since the first nuclear test of North Korea in 2006, the United Nations has imposed six sets of sanctions, which were tightened last year by two Security Council resolutions targeting the North Korean economy. "
