ricane Erema killed at least six people in British overseas territory as it passed through the Caribbean, before reaching Florida, where authorities ordered 6.3 million people to evacuate.
"There are five confirmed dead," the local government in the British Virgin Islands told AFP. Police in the Anguilla Islands also said an elderly man was killed after his house collapsed.
The island's disaster management department warned that "the population must find shelter by the afternoon at the latest as we await the passage of hurricane Jose, which may cause climatic conditions simulating the level of tropical storm."
Hurricane Erma killed 21 people in the eastern Caribbean and caused catastrophic destruction, although it dropped to the fourth category when crossing the archipelago on Saturday morning, carrying winds of 250 kilometers per hour.
Erma's strength swung between Category 4 and Category 5, the hurricane's highest rating at the US National Hurricane Center, which said, however, that the hurricane was expected to increase again as it moved away from Cuba.
Hurricane Erma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in 100 years, is expected to arrive in Florida on Sunday morning, causing damage to wind and torrential rains in the nation's fourth-largest population.
The scenes along the northern coast of Cuba were similar to the horrors left by Erma last week on other islands in the Caribbean, while Seigo de Avila was hit directly in the middle of the night.
Footage on Cuban television showed rippling waves of the sea, cloudy skies, heavy rains and trees swaying from high winds, as well as falling power lines.
Meteorologists have warned of wider destruction by Saturday morning as the hurricane winds its way to the north coast to the west via the Yancetti Spiritus and Villa Clara, where it is expected to head north toward Florida.
Ordered more than 6 million to evacuate their homes
Florida Governor Rick Seko ordered about 6.3 million people to evacuate, more than a quarter of the population of the state threatened by the typhoon.
The governor's office said in a statement that aid agencies in Florida "estimated that 6.3 million people in Florida received the eviction order" compared to 5.6 million on Friday night.
