The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it will receive at least 50,000 immigrants over the next two years in the European Union, coming directly from Africa, the Middle East or Turkey to secure a "safe and legitimate" alternative to the transit through the dangerous Mediterranean.
"It recommends a new resettlement program to transport 50,000 people to Europe who need international protection over the next two years," UNHCR said in a statement.
