The British government announced Wednesday that it expects to hire up to 8,000 employees by next year as it tries to speed up its preparations to exit the EU with or without an agreement.
British Prime Minister David Davis told his cabinet colleagues at a cabinet meeting that "preparatory work has accelerated considerably in recent months," said Prime Minister Teresa Mae's spokesman.
He said various departments were making "detailed plans" for about 300 issues, "to be ready for the negotiations and also for the possibility of not reaching an agreement."
"The plans set specific time frames, including, for example, the recruitment and training of new employees, the design and purchase of technological systems, and the completion of necessary legislative and regulatory amendments."
    Possible collapse of negotiations
"The prime minister is confident of reaching an agreement on future relations with the European bloc despite public differences on the BRICEST strategy," the spokesman said.
But government plans include a possible collapse of negotiations in Brussels and Britain's exit from the European Union in March 2019 without agreement.
The Customs Department expects to hire 3 to 5,000 additional employees next year as it prepares for new trade measures as Britain withdraws from the EU.
Three thousand jobs have already been advertised in various government departments to work on the BRICEST file, including 300 lawyers. "The plans are developing and improving steadily to ensure maximum readiness for the first day of the bricast," the spokesman said.
