(With photos) BRUSSELS, Oct 7 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Rowsch Nuri Shaways on Monday opened in Brussels a seminar aimed at attracting European investments to his country.

"Our country is rebuilding its institutions and economy, it is in need of modern technologies and the expertise of reputable international firms and businesses in all aspects of life," he said.

"This conference is an opportunity to call on interested investors and business people to participate in reconstructing and building various infrastructure sectors in Iraq," Shaways told the seminar which is jointly organised by the Arab-Belgium-Luxemburg Chamber of Commerce, the Iraqi embassy and a Belgian company AGORIA.

Referring to the UN Security Council Resolutions on Iraq including the latest for the exit from Chapter VII of the UN Charter, he stressed that "this represents a significant additional step for completing national sovereignty, political and economic independence, and a significant step in international relations domain."

He noted that last September Iraq launched the second National Development Plan for the period 2013-17 to invest USD 357 billion in development projects.

"We are optimistic about our country's economy," he said and added that Iraq has about 530 geological installations, out of which only 115 have been drilled and 71 of those in huge oil reserves. Out of the 71 fields, only 27 have been utilized.

On his part, Qaisar Hijazin, secretary general of the Arab-Belgium-Luxemburg Chamber of Commerce said it was the first time that the chamber has organised such a seminar on Iraq in Belgium.

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders will address the seminar this evening which is being attended by representatives of many companies from Belgium and Iraq. (end) nk.mt KUNA 071859 Oct 13NNNN
