Iraq receives from the United States two warships

The
American Embassy in Baghdad announced that Iraq recognized United
States Navy support ships to enhance its ability to protect its
territorial waters, without clarifying whether Iraq had purchased two
ships of the United States, or by the US Navy.
The Embassy statement released on 23 December that "the United States
Navy on 20 December handover Iraq naval support ships the length of each
60 metres" in the southern port of Umm Qasr in Basra.
It added that the two ships will "make a significant improvement in the
ability of the Iraqi Navy in the protection of Iraqi territorial waters
and provide the necessary support to the Iraqi patrol boats and fast
attack boats stationed at sea".
And
strengthen "floating oil platforms and the movement of security
personnel as well as to the ability of the vessels to support other
functions such as environmental clean-up in the event of a leak of oil
from floating platforms or in emergencies.
