Turkey criticized the US State Department's statements on the situation in Afrin, northern Syria, accusing Washington of not recognizing the reasons and objectives of Operation Olive Branch.
"The US authorities have not yet realized the cause, purpose and nature of the olive branch, or unfortunately they do not want to be aware of it," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksawi said in a statement on Monday, stressing that "the olive branch operation is an anti-terrorism campaign."
"The operation certainly does not target the civilian population, but aims to save them from the oppression and tyranny of the terrorist organization. In addition, all necessary measures have been taken to avoid harming civilians and humanitarian assistance has been delivered to them."
He considered the claim that the military operation in Afrin would damage the war on a "not grounded" organization.
The US State Department noted that "the United States is very concerned about events in the city of Afrin, which is predominantly Kurdish, where it seems that most of the population fled amid an attack by Turkish forces," and called on "all actors" to allow access of international humanitarian organizations to the region.
