Australia confirms its insistence on its strict asylum policy and excludes athletes

Australian authorities have announced that outstanding athletes will not be stripped of their tough policy, which categorically rejects illegal immigration through smuggling, while athletes and officials coming to the Commonwealth Games have warned against breach of visa requirements.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued an ultimatum for the end of the residency period for athletes holding medals and hoping to win more medals in weightlifting, warning that there will be no more asylum seekers joining their ranks.
Athletes and officials coming to Australia to attend the Commonwealth Games are eligible for asylum as soon as they arrive, lawyers say, despite warnings issued last month by the interior minister about visa violation.
Six thousand five hundred athletes and officials from the Gold Coast Games, including some countries affected by conflicts or where minorities are persecuted, as in most of the 53 member states where gay activity is criminalized.
Small numbers of game visitors usually exceed the length of stay on visas or seek asylum in most Commonwealth or Olympic Games.
Australia is following a tough policy to stop illegal immigration to the country, which provides for intercepting and returning smugglers' boats to their places of origin, as well as arresting those arriving at special detention centers on remote islands in the central Pacific. Ending / 25
