The United States has asked North Korea to ship overseas a number of nuclear warheads, an intercontinental ballistic missile and other nuclear material within six months, a Japanese newspaper reported on Thursday.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, apparently during their meeting this month, that Washington might remove Pyongyang from the list of state sponsors of terrorism if North Korea shipped those nuclear materials, the Asahi newspaper said.
Washington is considering granting guarantees for Kim's regime if Pyongyang agrees to complete nuclear disarmament at a summit between the leaders of the two countries on June 12, the paper said, quoting informed sources.
North Korea raised doubts on Wednesday that the possibility of holding the first summit of its kind, after describing the military exercises between the United States and South Korea as a provocation, canceled high-level talks with Seoul.
