Pompeo meets top North Korean official in New York to revive historic summit
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the top aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, arrived in New York on Wednesday to discuss arrangements for a historic summit between the North Korean leader and US President Donald Trump.
Pompeo called on General Kim Jong-chul, the right arm of the North Korean leader and head of the former military intelligence, to dinner immediately after his arrival from the Chinese capital Beijing on a China Airlines flight, according to the BBC.
He is the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit the United States in nearly 20 years.
Trump had earlier canceled the planned summit with his North Korean counterpart on June 12, but since then both sides have made new efforts to overcome the situation and keep the summit ahead of schedule.
Singapore is to host the inaugural summit, which will be the first meeting between US and North Korean leaders.
