North Korean leader Kim Jong-un crossed the border into South Korea for the first time on Friday, where he was received by South Korean President Mon Jie-nen ahead of an inter-Korean summit, the first in more than 10 years.
Kim and Moon smiled and shook hands and then crossed the border into North Korea briefly in a symbolic gesture, then returned to South Korea.
South Korean President Kim Jae-un told his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong-un that he hoped to reach a "bold agreement" at the start of a summit on Friday.
Kim and Moon are set to plant a memorial tree on the border. The inter-Korean summit comes after two meetings in Pyongyang in 2000 and 2007, the result of intense diplomatic efforts on the peninsula in recent months.
The two leaders sat face to face at an oval table to begin their historic summit, according to pictures broadcast on television.
"I hope we will have frank talks and reach a bold agreement, in order to offer the whole Korean people and people who want peace a great gift," he said.
The meeting in Beit El-Salam, in the southern part of the demilitarized zone separating the Korean Peninsula, is the third of its kind since the end of the Korean War in 1953.
On Friday, South Korean President Mon Jae-nen traveled to the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas for a historic summit with his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong-un, according to television footage.
"A new history is beginning now," Kim Jong-un wrote in South Korea's guestbook.
"I am glad to meet you," Moon Jae said, adding that Kim was the first North Korean leader to set foot in South Korea since the Korean War.
The South Korean president also made brief concessions within North Korean territory before returning to South Korea.

The Friday summit in the border village of Panmunjom will open the way for an historic meeting between Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump.
Earlier, the official Korean News Agency reported that Kim left Friday at Pyongyang to meet with his South counterpart.
"Kim Jong-un will openly discuss with Moon Jay-n on all issues to improve inter-Korean relations and achieve peace, prosperity and reunification on the Korean Peninsula," the agency said.
The issue of North Korea's nuclear arsenal is supposed to be at the top of the list of priorities to be discussed.
Since Kim's arrival in late 2011 after his father's death, he has accelerated the development of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic programs, and tensions on the peninsula have peaked.
But since Kim announced his country's participation in the winter Olympic Games in Pyongyang in the south, the two Koreas have seen a great deal of convergence.
The two Koreas are expected to issue a joint statement late on Friday, which could be called the Panmunjom Declaration. South Korean officials said the statement could touch upon nuclear disarmament, peace and improved relations.
America "optimistic"
The White House hoped Thursday that the inter-Korean summit would lead to a "future of peace" after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un flew to South Korea for a summit with his Korean counterpart Moon Jae-en.
"We hope the talks will make progress towards a future of peace and prosperity on the entire Korean peninsula," the White House said in a statement.
"The United States appreciates close coordination with our ally, the Republic of Korea, and looks forward to continuing strong discussions in preparation for the scheduled meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un in the coming weeks."
In 2017, Pyongyang conducted its most powerful nuclear test and tested intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching US territory.
There are 28,500 US troops in South Korea as part of the legacy of the Cold War between the South, the United States and the United Nations on the one hand and the North, backed by China and Russia on the other.
