French Minister of Economy Bruno Lemerre said most French companies would not be able to stay in Iran after US President Donald Trump announced his country's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Tehran and the re-imposition of sanctions on Tehran.

In an interview with France's BfM, Lemerre explained that the companies "will not be able to survive because they have to receive a replacement for the products they receive or manufacture in Iran," adding: "This will not be possible since we do not have a European financial body Sovereign and independent, "in reference to the absolute dollar dominance of global trade.

Washington withdrew from the nuclear deal in early May and decided to re-impose sanctions on Tehran and any companies it deals with, limiting them to 90 to 180 days to withdraw from Iran.

Several French companies announced they were preparing to withdraw from Iran, including the PSA group of Peugeot, Citroen, DS and Opel, after selling 446,600 vehicles in Iran last year.

Total Oil Group has also announced that it will withdraw from its massive gas project to develop Phase 11 of Iran's Faris field.
