US President Donald Trump said North Korea handed over to the United States the remains of 200 US soldiers killed during the Korean War .

"We have recovered our great heroes and their remains have been returned to us today, 200 of them have already been returned," Trump told a crowd of his supporters in Minnesota on Wednesday.

According to US military data, the fate of about 7,700 US soldiers killed in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953 is still unknown.

The United States earlier announced the suspension of the joint annual Freedom Guard exercise with South Korea , scheduled for next August, as a fruit of the Trump and Kim Jong-un meeting on June 12.

Until recently, regular military exercises between Washington and Seoul, considered by North Korea as a threat to its security, have become the most important tension factors in the region.

The Trump and Kim meeting in Singapore resulted in the signing of a joint document in which Pyongyang pledged to disarm in exchange for security guarantees from the United States.
