Iraq responds to Washington's decision to withdraw consular staff from Basra

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry on Saturday rejected the US Secretary of State's decision to withdraw US consular staff in Basra and warn US citizens not to travel to Iraq.
"The Iraqi Foreign Ministry regrets the decision of the US Secretary of State to withdraw US consular staff in Basra and warn US citizens not to travel to Iraq," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmad Mahjoub said in a statement.
"Iraq is committed to protecting and securing foreign diplomatic missions residing in its territory and the Iraqi government is determined to face any threats against diplomatic missions or any foreign visitor as their security is part of the security of Iraq and a legal and moral obligation," he said.
"The Foreign Ministry calls on the diplomatic missions not to pay attention to what is being promoted to disturb the atmosphere of security, stability and harm to Iraq's relations with the countries of the world."
