Senior political sources revealed the existence of a joint cooperation between the outgoing Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the Prime Minister-designate Adel Abdul Mahdi, on the development of a road map to eliminate corruption completely
In 2017, Iraq ranked 169th among 180 countries on Transparency International's corruption index.
The sources said that "the Prime Minister-designate, Adel Abdul Mahdi, is moving to prevent senior officials accused of corruption, who are against corruption files, to travel outside Iraq before taking power, in agreement with Abadi," indicating that "there is an intention to Abdul Mahdi to form a court Competent to hunt corrupt officials, in coordination with the Supreme Judicial Council and the management of competent judges to eliminate corruption.
Although Iraq is the second largest producer of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and receives tens of billions of dollars a year from the sale of crude, but successive Iraqi governments are still unable to provide basic services to the population.
Abadi said in a press conference earlier: "We have a basic campaign to combat corruption and the prosecution of corrupt, and soon we will publish what we have done in this regard, and has been referred to (integrity) and the people who have been sentenced," they returned, "the apparent corruption requires convincing evidence And unequivocal evidence, the judiciary is not satisfied with the words of the Prime Minister; it needs conclusive evidence on the ground. " He also referred to "the formation of committees to review all the work of officials, although there is a delay or corruption of a certain official, we will take strong action against him."
The member of the National Wisdom Movement Habib al-Tarfi, corruption and the economic challenge, as the most prominent challenges facing the next government.
He said in a press statement that "the new government will face many challenges, the most important of which is to harness the national professional, to exercise executive work, which drives a great way in solving problems. "The previous period was a period of allocation and acquisition and public theft of state funds, so the challenges exist, but after the breaking of a thorn, the security challenge is less, while the biggest challenge is the economic challenge and the fight against corruption, which are the most important challenges facing the next government.
He pointed out that "Iraq's economy is irrigated and depends on oil, and this is very dangerous, and is subject to the influence of it by foreign companies, which is outside the control of the Iraqi state, as the OPEC countries hostage to the actions of American and Western companies and policies."
He pointed out that "corruption has become a stronger institution of state institutions, and there must be a serious will to fight it, as it is less dangerous than terrorism."
