WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three former guards of Blackwater's private security company have been sentenced by a federal court for the killing of 14 unarmed Iraqi civilians at a Baghdad traffic light in 2007 in a case that sparked outrage in Iraq, The New York Times reported.
Former guards Dustin Hurd, Ivan Liberty and Paul Slough were convicted in 2014 on several counts of murder for their involvement in the massacre and were sentenced to 30 years in prison.
But in 2017, a federal appeals court ruled that the three defendants should be retried, saying the prison was too long.
Colombia's Federal Court on Thursday sentenced the three to 15 years in prison, Liberty 14 and Hurd 12 years, the newspaper said.
The three defendants, along with a fourth security guard named Nicholas Slatten, were tried and tried separately.
Slaten was convicted of murder in December in the case, where prosecutors said he had fired first. He was sentenced to life in prison last month.
No defense lawyers or prosecutors were available for comment early on Friday.
The incident received widespread attention because of its brutality, although it occurred in a city that was then plagued by sectarian conflict and sparked controversy over the role of contracted security guards working for the US government in war zones.
The four guards were moving in a convoy of four Blackwater armed vehicles and were trying to clear the way for US diplomats after a car bomb exploded nearby.
They then fired automatic weapons at Iraqi civilians, including women and children.
