Iraqi President Barham Salih considered that what has been achieved after 2003 is not small, but it does not meet what the Iraqis aspire to.
According to a statement issued by the Media Office of the Presidency, the Iraqi President said at the Bahr Al-Ulum Dialogue Forum that Iraq has great merits in preparing for a new political contract.
Barham Salih pointed out that the country "is suffering from serious political bottlenecks that need solutions out of the ordinary, and it is important to benefit from the academic elites, universities and research centers in this regard."
The President of the Republic stressed that “the Iraq project must be a national project from within through the establishment of a capable and respectable state that serves its citizens and harnesses the country’s resources to serve them and is in security with its people and its neighborhood.”
He described that "what has been achieved after 2003 is not small, but we must have the courage to say that there are imbalances and do not meet what the Iraqis aspire to," according to the statement.
Regarding the upcoming elections, Barham Salih said, "It came in response to the demands of the people who felt that the political situation was unable to serve them, and as a reaction to what they considered rigging of their votes in the previous elections."
Before 2003, Saddam Hussein, the fifth president of Iraq, ruled from 1979 until 2003, ie nearly 24 years. After his arrest, he remained in the custody of the United States until he was referred to trial before a special court in several criminal cases brought against him.
Saddam was convicted of crimes against humanity, and was sentenced to death by hanging. The sentence was carried out on the morning of the first day of Eid al-Adha, which coincided with December 30, 2006.
