An Iraqi source revealed, on Wednesday, the reason why Iraq did not invite Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to the Baghdad summit conference scheduled for the end of this month.
The source said, according to "RT", "The conference came with an Iraqi-French idea, and it will be attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, who is pushing for the leaders of countries to attend Baghdad."
He added that "one of Macron's conditions for the success of the conference was not to invite Assad to Baghdad, as he refuses to sit with him."
The source pointed out that "the Iraqi government agreed with Macron in his opinion not to embarrass the rest of the leaders."
And the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a statement yesterday: "Some media outlets reported that the Iraqi government had invited the Syrian government to participate in the summit meeting of the neighboring countries that will be held at the end of this month in Baghdad."
She added, "The Iraqi government confirms that it is not interested in this invitation, and that the official invitations are sent by an official letter and in the name of the State of the Iraqi Prime Minister, and no other party has the right to submit the invitation on behalf of the Iraqi government, so clarification is required."
