The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, congratulated the Iraqis for holding the parliamentary elections safely and without problems, praising the organizational and security atmosphere in which the electoral process took place, and expressing his appreciation for the efforts made by the Iraqi government to achieve this important constitutional entitlement and fulfill its commitment to the Iraqi people.
Aboul Gheit confirmed, during his receipt of a report from Ambassador Saeed Abu Ali, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the League of Arab States Mission to Monitor Parliamentary Elections in Iraq, on the mission’s assessment of the electoral process in Iraq, including field observations monitored by the League’s observers at polling stations in a number of Iraqi cities. , on the importance of respecting the results of the electoral process for the sake of Iraq's stability.
He called for "accelerating the formation of the new government in accordance with the stipulated constitutional timings, and in a manner that contributes to continuing the reform and reconstruction process, and achieving prosperity and development for the Iraqi people."
