Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki seeks to win the "largest" parliamentary bloc to form the next government, and at the same time supports those opposed to the results of the recent elections from the rest of the Shiite forces, with the exception of the Sadrist bloc, which came first according to the preliminary results.
The State of Law Coalition, led by al-Maliki and winning 36 seats, does not hide these ambitions, but it is facing his opponent, Muqtada al-Sadr, and his allies from the losing factions, which are looming with military action on the ground. A source close to al-Maliki said that al-Maliki "tested all the winners of the elections about their orientations in the coalition. He is now studying the next step."
According to leaders in the State of Law Coalition; "Al-Maliki wants to form the largest bloc, without excluding his traditional opponents in the Shiite arena."
All Iraqi political forces are reluctant to show a clear position on joining an alliance led by al-Maliki. With regard to the Sunni and Kurdish blocs, they prefer "waiting for a Shiite-Shiite consensus to address the crisis caused by the losers in the polls."
While the demonstrations organized by the Shiite forces that lost in the elections continue, attention is turning to the city of Najaf to contain this tension.
According to information, a meeting is scheduled to be held soon in the city, where al-Sadr is based, to contain the Shiite-Shiite tension and determine the shape of future understandings. The attention of Iraqis is also directed to the supreme Shiite authority, which may make its contribution to the crisis during the Friday sermon.
