The Digital Media Center (DMC) considered, on Wednesday, that the Ministry of “security or military” publishes the names of its members, as a clear threat to privacy, and provides an opportunity for many hackers to exploit this data in phishing operations using digital and traditional methods.
The center confirmed in a statement that Mawazine News received a copy of it, as part of its comment on the recent publication by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense and through its digital platforms of hundreds of names that were accepted in military colleges, as an incorrect step, as it may pose a threat to the information infrastructure of state institutions and a violation For personal privacy by publishing the five names, surname and province of each accepted student.
The center explained that this database is sensitive information for the country, and there is no justification for its publication and circulation in a country that has been targeted by terrorism for years, and this mechanism cannot be included in the transparency list that the Ministry of Defense sought and was keen to achieve.
The center indicated that it had noted earlier last year the danger of circulating information about members of the security services, as it represented an opportunity for terrorist groups that have cyber teams spread on many social media platforms that work to “steal and impersonate the identity of the members of these devices or endanger the lives of families.” Those affiliates are at risk.”
The Center stressed the necessity of adopting other methods of informing affiliates or students who have been accepted through their personal phones or e-mails, or by publishing special (temporary) numbers obtained by the affiliate when applying for a job in this or that ministry, as well as many other traditional methods.
The Center also renews its call to the legislative bodies in Iraq to find a law to protect personal data, provided that it includes regulatory and punitive articles, due to its importance in light of the digital transformation that the state is heading towards, as is the case with the developed countries of the world.
