Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: The investigation into the files of corruption of powerful and influential personalities in Iraq becomes one of the most prominent criticisms of the trend towards oversight and government performance in general since 2003.
Political pressure affects the ability of the concerned institutions to fully and effectively investigate corruption files.
On Saturday, independent MP Hadi al-Salami revealed that 800 corruption files had been referred to the judiciary and the Integrity Commission during the last period.
Al-Salami said, "We have referred more than 800 large and serious corruption files, some of them related to senior officials, to the judiciary."
He added that “there are files that have been resolved, including the file of the Ministry of Municipalities, and three senior officials have been judged,” and indicated that some of the referred files are related to the waste of billions related to the previous government.
Over the past years, Iraq has witnessed an outbreak of corruption in all parts of the state, which has led to a great waste and misappropriation of public funds.
Despite the multiplicity of oversight agencies and the joint cooperation between them, corruption is still growing and no force can stop it. Rather, these various agencies have become incapable of bringing political and partisan figures to account for these major thefts.
Information talks about what the investigators are exposed to in the files, and this can affect their ability to access the necessary information and evidence.
In many cases, powerful and influential figures enjoy immunity and powerful positions that make it difficult to investigate or prosecute them legally.
Strong and influential personalities also enjoy strong media coverage, which prevents the publication of any news or reports about their corruption or crimes.
