Iraq agreed to pay $2.76 billion in gas and electricity debts to Iran after obtaining an exemption from sanctions from the United States, according to statements by a senior Iraqi Foreign Ministry official to Reuters.
Iraq imports 40 million cubic meters of gas per day from Iran, and the previous interruption of supplies led to the loss of more than 7,000 megawatts of electricity, which brought the production capacity to about 15,000 megawatts, while what is required to meet the country’s electricity needs is about 24,000 megawatts, according to What Iranian Oil Minister Javad Auchi said in January.
Spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Al-Sahaf confirmed today, Saturday, that Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has achieved advanced results regarding financial dues between Iraq and Iran, noting in a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency that the Foreign Minister led a meaningful dialogue with his American counterpart during the international conference to combat terrorism that was held in Riyadh, which led to substantial arrangements regarding financial dues between Iraq and Iran.
Iraq and Iran had agreed in mid-May to extend two contracts for the purchase of gas from Tehran for a period of 5 years, according to statements quoted by the Mehr News Agency on the Iranian Minister of Oil, provided that Iranian gas feeds the Baghdad and Basra power stations.
Yahya Al-Ishaq, head of the Iran-Iraq Chamber of Commerce, said that part of the released money was allocated to the costs of Iranian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, while the other part was allocated to the purchase of basic commodities, according to what Iranian news agencies reported.
Iranian territory has the world's second largest gas reserves after Russia, but the US sanctions imposed on it have limited Iranians' access to technology and slowed the development of gas exports.
The source at the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said the payments would be sent through the Commercial Bank of Iraq and used for the costs of Iranian pilgrims and their imported food.
Iran's gas supplies to Iraq fell to "zero" last January, according to previous statements made by the Iraqi Minister of Electricity, as the supply of production stations was completely stopped, and the Iranian side said at the time that the matter happened for the purposes of maintaining gas pipelines.
