Economic expert Salah Nuri, former director of the Office of Financial Supervision, predicted that new Iraqi banks would be punished for manipulating the dollar.
Nuri said in a press interview seen by “Takadam” that “it is possible that new sanctions will be issued against other banks, and the procedures of the Central Bank of Iraq towards the 14 banks that have been subjected to sanctions, and allowing them to deal in Iraqi dinars and any foreign currency except the dollar, from the point of view of the US Federal Reserve, that it has not implemented the sanctions against it, and therefore it is likely that the sanctions will continue.”
He added, "The Central Bank's tools regarding these penalties are limited and binding under the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Law, and the Central Bank is within an international agreement in this field."
It is noteworthy that the United States of America prevented 14 Iraqi banks from dealing in dollars, according to the Wall Street Journal, quoting American officials, after its involvement in “money laundering and fraud operations.”
The banks are: {The Islamic Advisor Bank for Investment and Finance, Al-Qartas Islamic Bank for Investment and Finance, Al-Taif Islamic Bank for Investment and Finance, Elaf Islamic Bank, Erbil Bank for Investment and Finance, International Islamic Bank, Trans-Iraq Investment Bank, Mosul Bank for Development and Investment, Al-Rajeh Islamic Bank, Sumer Commercial Bank, Trust International Investment Bank, Islamic Money Bank, Islamic World Bank for Investment and Finance, Zain Iraq Islamic Bank for Investment and Development}.
As a result, the exchange rate of the dollar rose to exceed the barrier of 1500 dinars.
And the advisor to the Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, saw the rise in the exchange rate in recent days as a reaction to the deprivation of 14 Iraqi banks from dealing in dollars.
The Parliamentary Finance Committee intends to summon the Minister of Finance, Taif Sami, and the Governor of the Central Bank, Ali Al-Alaq, to discuss the issue of the decline in the price of the dinar against the dollar and other files.
