{Local: Al Furat News} Energy expert Furat Al Mousawi said today, Saturday, that Iraq did not discourage the idea of re-establishing a new nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes, pointing out that it would make a quantum leap in the field of using clean energy to produce electric power.
"We support the idea of building a nuclear reactor project to reduce the use of oil and gas in the projects of the electric power production system," Mousawi told {Euphrates News}, expressing that "this project will contribute to the sustainability and durability of energy and reduce carbon emissions, and the project will establish the principle of energy transition."
    national will
He added, "The idea of the project is excellent, but in Iraq it needs national will and specialized management for such a strategic and vital project to reach the desired goals of such projects."
    Quantum leap
He noted that "Iraq has previous experience in establishing and dealing with nuclear reactors, as it established the first nuclear reactor in Iraq at the end of the seventies of the last century, which was destroyed by the planes of the Israeli entity, but that did not deter Iraq from the idea of re-establishing a new nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes, which Iraq will make a quantum leap in the field of using clean energy to produce electric power."
This step comes in light of the desire of some Arab countries to establish nuclear plants in order to produce electricity, as Saudi Arabia is seeking to build the first nuclear plant, while Egypt has begun construction of the Dabaa nuclear plant, which is being built by the Russian company, "Rosatom".
The UAE also owns the "Barakah" plant, as it is the first Arab country to build a nuclear plant and has already started producing electricity from it.
Iraq suffers from a shortage in the provision of electricity supplies, especially in the summer months, when consumption increases with the rise in temperatures. The government seeks to increase supplies through electrical interconnection agreements with the Gulf Cooperation Council and other Arab countries.
Iraq imports electricity and gas from Iran for between a third and 40 percent of its energy needs, which is particularly important in the summer months when temperatures reach 50 degrees Celsius and energy consumption peaks.
