Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The Deputy for Operations Affairs in the Revolutionary Guard, Brigadier General Abbas Nilforshan, set, on Saturday, the end date of the deadline set for Iraq to disarm separatist groups, while stressing that we are forced to defend the interests of the Iranian people.
Nilforshan said, “September 19 is the end of the deadline set for Iraq to disarm separatist groups.
He added: “If they do not fulfill their obligations, we will return to the previous situation and we are forced to defend the interests of the Iranian people.”
Earlier, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Iran and Iraq had reached an agreement to disarm what it described as “armed terrorist groups” in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, transfer them to other places next month, and close their military headquarters.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in a weekly press briefing, “Iran and Iraq have reached an agreement under which Iraq commits to disarming separatist militants and terrorist groups present on its territory, closing their bases, and moving them to other places before next September 19.”
The spokesman did not specify the locations to which the militants would be transferred, and Iraq has not yet commented on the matter.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stressed that “if the agreement is not implemented on time, we will fulfill our responsibilities towards the terrorist groups in Iraqi Kurdistan.”
According to Iranian officials, Iraq has pledged to stop the activity of Iranian Kurdish parties in the Kurdistan region.
However, Reuters quoted an unnamed Iraqi security official as saying, “The country has pledged not to allow armed groups to use Iraqi Kurdish lands to attack Iranian border crossings.”
The spokesman for the Iranian Kurdistan Democratic Party, Khaled Azizi, said, “Party members carry weapons to defend themselves, not to attack Iran.”
