Al-Muthanna warns of the dangers facing desert residents

The Muthanna Environment Directorate alerted to the humanitarian risks facing sheep farmers and residents of the Samawah Desert, due to the presence of war remnants and cluster bombs that are spread over an area of 150 km from the Salman Desert to the borders of Busayya district, calling on international organizations to help remove them. Environment Director Youssef Sawadi told Al-Sabah that previous wars left large numbers of projectiles and mines in the governorate, especially the southern desert, noting that there is an agreement with the United Nations stipulating that Iraq must be free of mines, war remnants and military projectiles during the period. The year is 2028. The Samawah Desert is witnessing many incidents in which sheep farmers and desert dwellers, nomads and fishermen, are victims, who are ignorant of the forms of these cluster wastes, which are spread over an area of 150 km, according to environmental statistics. Records indicate that the number of victims of these war wastes reached 3,700 people in the period between the year 1991 until the present year.
