The Iron and Steel Company in Basra has set the date for the trial operation of the rolling mill, calling on the Ministry of Finance to launch allocations for a project to install steel plant equipment with a design capacity of approximately 600 thousand tons annually.
The Director General of the Iron and Steel Company, Abbas Hayal, told “Al-Sabah”: “The trial operation of the rolling mill within next February will be the first step to receiving the factory from the company implementing the rehabilitation,” pointing to “providing a quantity of iron blocks sufficient for the trial operation, which is the basic material for the production of iron.” Reinforcement sizes range from 4 mm to 32".
He added, "The launch of the factory's production will enable the company to negotiate with public and private sector companies to equip the rolling mill by cutting iron blocks to produce reinforcing shutters, which will contribute to providing 30% of the local market's needs for spiral reinforcement, which will achieve an additional percentage of profits for the company's development."
The Director of Iron and Steel called on the Ministry of Finance to “release the allocations for the project to erect the equipment of the second steel mill, the rehabilitation rates of which exceeded 75%, in order to avoid a sudden cessation of the work of the executing company,” pointing to “the importance of providing the allocations that will enable the completion of the installation project within two months according to the specified timings.”
He explained that "the rehabilitation projects are nearing their end, especially since the company was the first government company in the year 1972 in the Khor Al-Zubair Industrial Area after a twenty-year hiatus. It specializes in the production of reinforcing wires, sections and iron pipes that are used in the work of constructing infrastructure for residential, industrial, agricultural, oil and electricity projects." And electronics.”
Hayal continued by saying: “It is necessary to revive negotiations with Italian companies and other countries to recover the equipment of the Ishtar factories for the manufacture of automobile steel and the industrial equipment and machines confiscated during the economic blockade on Iraq by Resolution 661 in 1990,” indicating that “this huge industrial equipment was confiscated while it was on its way to Iraq.” In the ports of Arab and European countries after the United Nations imposed the international blockade on Iraq, it was carried out unjustly, and without coordination with the Iraqi parties
benefiting from it.
The director in iron and steel stated that “the previous regime concluded contracts worth more than a billion dollars in the 1980s with Italian companies to build the Ishtar factory complex for the production of automobile iron, machinery and industrial equipment next to the iron and steel factory in Khor Al-Zubair,” calling for “the use of engineering plans.” And technical information for the giant Ishtar factory complex developed by international companies to revive the project, which is a gateway to the manufacture of a complete car in Iraq, in addition to the manufacture of various equipment and machines, which establishes an infrastructure base for heavy and light industries and electronic and military equipment.”
