    Economy News - Baghdad
Today, Wednesday, the Economic Committee in the House of Representatives will meet with representatives of the Iraqi Private Banks Association and the banks that were included in the US sanctions list.
A member of the Parliamentary Economy and Industry Committee, Soran Omar, said in an interview followed by Al-Eqtisad News, “The meeting will discuss the problems and obstacles that private banks in Iraq suffer from and the sanctions imposed on them by the United States of America.”
At the beginning of this month, the Central Bank of Iraq announced a new list of banks that will be prohibited from dealing in dollars, and the list included the names of eight banks that were not previously on the list.
A week before that, the US Treasury Deputy Secretary for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, Brian Nielsen, visited Iraq and met with Iraqi officials.
The eight new banks that were prohibited from dealing in dollars are: Assyrian Investment Bank, Iraqi Investment Bank, Iraqi Union Bank, Kurdistan International Islamic Bank, Al-Huda Bank, Al-Janoub Islamic Bank, Arab Islamic Bank, and Hammurabi Commercial Bank.
A spokesman for the US Treasury Department announced: "We commend the measures of the Central Bank of Iraq to protect the Iraqi financial system from misuse, which led to enabling Iraqi legal banks to deal with international financial institutions."
In July 2023, the Central Bank of Iraq, at the request of American officials, banned 14 Iraqi banks from dealing in dollars.
The Central Bank of Iraq announced that banks that are prohibited from dealing in dollars can deal in other currencies.
