By using a quarter of its waste, Baghdad will produce twice as much electricity as that of Jordan and 2% of Iran’s gas

Next month, Iraq is supposed to begin the first experiment in producing electricity from waste, using 3,000 tons of waste daily in the capital, Baghdad, to produce energy equivalent to twice the amount that will reach Iraq from Jordan, as well as covering 2% of Iranian gas.
Assistant Director General of the Department of Environment and Solid Waste in the Baghdad Municipality, Karim Azab, stated that the beginning of next March will witness the selection of the investing company to begin implementing the project, especially since the Municipality has identified the Al-Nahrawan area on the Rusafa side as the place for its implementation, provided that the landfill site is designed according to international environmental specifications and standards. According to the government newspaper Al-Sabah.
He pointed out that “the project, which will take 24 months to implement, will contribute to saving 80 to 90 megawatts, by investing 3,000 tons of waste daily.”
He pointed out that the Municipality of the Capital is planning a similar project on the Karkh side in the Abu Ghraib area, to be declared an investment opportunity after the completion of the expropriation of the lands on which it will be implemented, noting that the Municipality is working to invest about 6 thousand tons of waste daily through the two aforementioned projects. This is equivalent to 6 Thousands of megawatts, about 50% of the waste that Baghdad throws out daily alone. As for the electricity that will be produced from the project in Nahrawan, amounting to 80 to 90 megawatts, this amount is equivalent to double the amount of electricity that will come from Jordan to Iraq within the electrical connection for the first phase, which amounts to 40 megawatts. Watts, for which contracts were signed two days ago, with the hope that it will rise in the second phase to 150 and then 500 megawatts. The 90 megawatts also equate to 2% of the total electricity produced by Iraq based on Iranian gas.
