Yesterday, Monday, the Ministry of Planning agreed with the Ministry of Environment on a mechanism to implement a mine clearance strategy and declare Iraq free of mines by the year 2028.
A statement from the ministry stated, “A joint meeting with the Ministry of Environment was held in the Ministry of Planning, during which mechanisms for implementing the mine clearance strategy were discussed, and working to declare Iraq free of mines by the year 2028, in accordance with the obligations agreed upon in this regard.”

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Planning, Maher Hammad Johan, who chaired the meeting, confirmed, according to the statement, that “the projects of the Ministry of Environment are of interest to both the ministry and the government, within the framework of the policies and procedures that are being implemented to confront climate change, reduce its effects on the Iraqi reality, and clean up the lands.” Iraq is free from mine waste, because of the great danger it poses to people’s lives, and obstructs development projects,” pointing to “joint work with the Ministry of Finance, to provide the necessary funds possible to end the mine clearance file.”
For his part, Environment Minister Nizar Amidi praised “the level of support provided by the Ministry of Planning to his ministry, as part of its endeavor to implement its projects, especially with regard to the mine clearance file,” noting that “there are 6,000 square kilometers contaminated with mines.”
Aamidi stressed, "The importance of adhering to the timetable included in the strategy prepared by the Ministry of Environment, which set the year 2028 as a final time limit for declaring Iraq completely free of mines," pointing out that "there is a continuous national effort to remove mines, but it is insufficient, in light of the expansion of contaminated areas." “This requires more support for the efforts of the Ministry of Environment in dealing with this file, which includes conducting technical surveys and mine clearance operations.”
