The Health and Environment Committee of the Basra Governorate Council, on Thursday, accused oil companies of being behind 70% of cancer cases in the governorate.
The head of the committee, Ali Al-Abadi, said, “Emissions from oil activities of companies operating in Basra Governorate caused 70% of cases of cancer, kidney disease, asthma, and others.”
Al-Abadi added, “The Council is moving to bring viewpoints closer by taking advantage of the powers of some departments and companies, correcting some previous mistakes, and addressing them in a way that satisfies all parties.”
Al-Abadi called on the local government to “take advantage of the potential of oil companies committed to licensing round contracts with the Ministry of Oil.”
He pointed out that "there is a proposal to form a fund to treat the diseases that result from this."
