Technical reason delay opening the Saudi embassy in Baghdad

    Tuesday, 14 May 2013 10:55

    Shafaq
News / Saudi Arabia informed on Tuesday the Iraqi Foreign Ministry,
that the opening of Riyadh embassy in Baghdad will be delayed scheduled
at the end of current May, for reasons “technical” reasons.

    It is
worth mentioning that the Iraqi-Saudi relations were not normalized
yet, despite the change of the regime after 2003; that relationship has
often witnessed tensions on the background of sectarian differences, as
well as sentenced prisoners issue in both countries.

    “Saudi
officials confirmed that to the Iraqi side that the decision does not
have any political dimensions,” a source in the Iraqi Foreign Ministry
    told “Shafaq News”.

Saudi Arabia nominated its ambassador to
Jordan in 2012 to the Iraqi Embassy in Riyadh, Fahd Abdul Mohsen Al-Zaid
to be non- resident ambassador in Baghdad, while Iraqi Foreign Minister
Hoshyar Zebari emphasized that Saudi Arabia appointed an ambassador to
Iraq to restore diplomatic relations fully between the two countries in a
move that is considered the first since 1990.

    Saudi Arabia’s
decision to appoint an ambassador in Baghdad, is the first in more than
20 years after cutting diplomatic relations between the two sides after
the invasion of Saddam Hussein's regime to Kuwait in the second of
August 1990, where Riyad had taken a tough stance towards the system at
that time and it became a base for the gathering of multinational forces
which consisted from more than 30 countries to liberate Kuwait.
