Kuwait decided to set as a senior diplomats at its Embassy in Iraq to follow up the issue of Kuwaiti prisoners and the lost after the invasion of the former regime in 1990.

The Security Council last Thursday voted overwhelmingly to exit Iraq from international sanctions imposed under the provisions of Chapter VII, because of the previous regime's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

Quoted by the official Kuwaiti News Agency Kuna said the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry that "the issue of prisoners and missing persons and the return of Kuwaiti property are matters of a purely humanitarian nature and look forward to the continuation of the Iraqi Government to cooperate with the State of Kuwait and of the international community within the framework of the Tripartite Commission and its technical Committee, chaired by the International Committee of the Red Cross to end this file."

"To activate this mechanism the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry will appoint a senior diplomats at the Embassy in Baghdad to work with [us] to follow up this humanitarian issue, in addition to direct cooperation with the Iraqi side," without revealing the source of the name.

According to the text of a statement by the UN Security Council resolution which has been lifting UN sanctions on Iraq, "the Council welcomes the cooperation established between Iraq and Kuwait in the search for missing Kuwaitis and third-country nationals within the framework of the Tripartite Commission and its Technical Subcommittee under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the positive efforts made by the Government of Iraq with regard to the return of all Kuwaiti and third-country nationals or their remains and the return of Kuwaiti property.

It said "the Security Council reaffirms the need to continue efforts to locate and return missing Kuwaiti property, including archives, through the Inter-Ministerial Committee established to this end, calls upon the Government of Iraq, in fulfilment of its commitment to facilitate the repatriation of all Kuwaiti and third-country nationals referred to in paragraph 30 of resolution 687 [1991], to continue to cooperate with the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide any information on such persons, facilitating the access of the International Committee of the Red Cross to people wherever they are, and to facilitate The International Committee of the Red Cross to search for Kuwaiti and third-country nationals still unaccounted or search for their remains and continue efforts to search for missing Kuwaiti property, including archives, through its inter-ministerial Committee. "

The UN Security Council demanded that the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq [us], to "promote and facilitate efforts for the repatriation of all Kuwaiti and third-country nationals or their remains and the return of Kuwaiti property, including archives, seized by Iraq, and further requests the Secretary-General to submit a separate report to the Security Council on these issues in its reports on the progress made in the fulfilment of all of the Mission's responsibilities, and also requests the Secretary-General to consider appointing a Deputy The Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the Mission of the political affairs and is responsible for the supervision of these issues and to ensure adequate resources for this purpose.
