Monday, January 16, 2017, 12:38 PM - Encountering a moose when you're driving on a snowy highway is not a prospect most travellers relish. Now imagine running into a small herd of them, in the video below.

On January 3, James Levesque had just such an encounter, driving alone on Highway 631 in the northern Ontario community of Hornpayne. The light was fading, the highway clearly had more than a bit of snow on it, and the moose were marching right in the centre of it (Levesque sighted six of the animals altogether, though only some were caught on the dashcam) -- all factors working against Levesque.
Levesque told The Weather Network he started to slow down and then tried to brake, but his vehicle struggled to stop. By that point, some of the moose had fled to the side of the highway, but that left two who were running in the centre of it, right in his vehicle's path.
With stopping safely not possible under the conditions, Levesque lifted his foot off the brake and managed to steer right between the two moose, leaving them uninjured.

The video was posted to Facebook, and has since been shared more than a thousand times and garnered more than a thousand comments. Though some were critical of Levesque, many leaped to his defense.
"On a snow covered road, braking is just a trip to the ditch," one commenter said. "You can't steer if your wheels aren't turning."
