Two people were killed and six wounded Friday in a knife attack in Turku, southwestern Finland, police said, adding that the suspect was arrested after being shot and wounded in the leg without knowing his motives.

"There are eight victims in the appeal process, two dead and six wounded," Turku police said in a tweet on Twitter.
She added that the suspect was "a young man of foreign origin" without further clarification, noting that the investigators were cooperating with immigration authorities to determine his identity, which was not immediately known.
Police said the attack was carried out by one person, who said she was investigating whether there were other people who conspired with him.
Police arrested the suspect at least 20 minutes after the attack in the heart of Turku after 4 pm (1300 GMT).
The attack occurred at a time of heightened alert in Europe after at least 14 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in two cars in Barcelona and Cambrils in two hours of attacks.
In Turku, news websites published pictures of a body covered with a white blanket at the site of the attack.
"I saw an old woman and tried to help her. She was bleeding and the blood was covering her body," said Wali Hashi, an eyewitness.
"She was injured by a stab in the neck."
"A young woman was shouting loudly in one corner of the square, and we saw a man in the square with a knife in his hand," another witness told WILA television on condition of anonymity.
The center of Turku, about 140 km (60 miles) from the capital, Helsinki, was shut down quickly and shops and restaurants were closed.
Police in Tire said they had tightened security at airports and train stations.
"The number of patrols has been increased and the information gathering process has intensified," she said.
"It's hard to understand that similar violence can happen in Turku," said Alexei Randall, the city's 185,000-strong mayor, in a statement. Sf

TURKU, Finland,— Finnish police say two people have died and six people have been injured after a stabbing attack in a market square in the south-western city of Turku.

It was unclear if the incident was related to terrorism, said police, who shot at and arrested one man after the attack. Contrary to earlier reports, police said they were not looking for other suspects.

Finnish police raided an apartment in eastern Turku and said it was “quite certain” it had identified the attacker who killed two people and wounded eight during a stabbing rampage on Friday, local media reported.

The raid occurred just before 10 p.m. (1900 GMT), after police located a suspected vehicle, a white Fiat Ducato, whose owner lived in a building located in Turku’s Varissuo suburb, Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat reported.

A number of people were arrested during the night, as the Nordic country investigated their possible link to the attacker of a now “quite certain identity”, Finnish news agency SST said.

“We are investigating what their role is in this. Whether they had something to do with this act, or if they were just involved with this person (the suspect)”, detective superintendent Markus Laine was quoted saying of those arrested.

It was unclear if any of the arrests happened in the raided apartment.

On Friday afternoon, a knife-wielding man went on a stabbing rampage at a market square in Turku, before being shot and arrested, police said shortly after the attack.

It was uncertain if the police were looking for more suspects related to the attack or if more raids would follow during the night. Police warned people to stay away from the city and reinforced security nationwide.

Patrols and surveillance increased after the stabbings, in case more attackers were involved. People were allowed to return to the city center a few hours later.

Finland’s prime minister, Juha Sipilä, tweeted: “The government is closely following the events in Turku and the ongoing police operation. The government will meet later today.”

The president of the European commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, said: “It is with great concern that I have learned of the violent attacks in Turku, Finland. While details are still emerging, we strongly condemn this unprovoked attack which comes only 24 hours after the horror that unfolded in Spain.”

Varissuo suburb, Turku’s largest, is home to a large immigrant population and is located about 7 kilometers away from the market square where the attack took place.
