[rtl]US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning any financial transactions in America in Venezuela's new encrypted currency, Petro, as a "hoax" from the government of President Nicolas Maduro .[/rtl]
[rtl]US officials have warned it is a "hoax" from President Maduro's government to further undermine democracy in the OPEC member state .[/rtl]
[rtl]"Petro is a desperate attempt by a corrupt system to defraud global investors," a senior administration official told reporters, warning that any currency transactions would violate US sanctions .[/rtl]
[rtl]"Investing in petro has to be seen as direct support for a dictatorial regime and its attempt to undermine the democratic system in Venezuela ."[/rtl]
[rtl]The White House said Trump's decision prohibited "all related transactions, financing and other transactions by any US citizen and resident in the United States in respect of any digital currency" issued by the Venezuelan government since January 9 .[/rtl]
[rtl]Maduro hopes that coded currencies will help Venezuela to circumvent US financial sanctions as the country suffers from rampant inflation and a collapse in the country's socialist economy .[/rtl]
