US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that the US administration viewsRussia as a country that defies US strategic interests.

"We know that Russia defies our strategic interests and the security of our allies, and this is evidenced by the chemical attack in Britain, and because of it, Russia has been punished by us and some of our allies," Pompeo said.

Pompeo said that Washington would not allow Russian intervention in the midterm elections to Congress in 2018, saying: "We will not allow Russia to intervene in our elections in 2018.

The US Secretary of State promised that the US authorities would take "appropriate measures to Russia's continuous attempts in this area."

Midterm elections are expected in the United States in November 2018, with 435 deputies elected to the House of Representatives and 34 senators.
