The new Canadian commander of the NATO mission in Iraq, Maj. Gen. Danny Fortin, announced Thursday that he plans to deploy 500 new troops in Iraq by the end of October.
"Half of the 500 NATO military personnel to be sent to Iraq will be from Canada, which pledged to lead the mission in the first year," Fortin said in a televised interview.
"The first challenge we face will be to understand the needs of Iraqis, not what we think they need," he said.
"He is no longer able to control a large area of land and is unable to carry out complex operations, yet it does not mean that the threat posed by them has completely disappeared," he said.
The military official expected the deployment of NATO troops in Iraq in late October and that the structure of the training mission will become clearer in late autumn once the needs of Iraqi forces are assessed.
