The US special envoy to Syria said the administration of US President Donald Trump hoped the fight against a terrorist in his last stronghold in northeastern Syria would end in months, adding that "US forces will remain to ensure a" permanent defeat "for the organization.
Ambassador James Jeffrey added that the United States believes that the next stage in Syria will witness a crushing defeat, activate the political process and end the long civil war.
In pursuit of this goal, the United States hopes to form a committee before the end of the year to draft a new constitution for Syria in implementation of the agreement reached by leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Turkey during their meeting in Istanbul in October.
He added that US forces will remain after the coalition forces victory over military units to ensure that it does not "renew itself."
"Permanent defeat does not mean simply crushing the last conventional military buildup units that control the territory but ensuring that it does not immediately re-emerge through sleeping cells in the form of a rebel movement," Jeffrey said.
Jeffrey said the final ground battle was going on along the Euphrates River and led by Syria's democratic forces with the help of US military personnel.
"The fighting is continuing and we hope it will be over in months and this will be the last territory it controls," he said.
Jeffrey said that the formation of a committee under the auspices of the UN to start work on a new constitution for Syria "decisive step" to push forward the political process. "
He added that the United States will carry Russia 's responsibility to use its influence to come Bhlifaa Syrian President Bashar al - Assad to the negotiating table.
