US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about trade negotiations with China, where US officials are expected to arrive in Beijing for talks aimed at easing the trade war.
Trump said on Sunday that he had recently spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying, "I really think they want to reach an agreement." China's tariffs have certainly hurt badly.
After several tariff increases on both sides, the two leaders agreed on December 1 to postpone further increases. US officials are due to arrive in Beijing on Monday.
Both governments are under pressure to reach a settlement.
China's economic growth fell to 6.5 percent in the September quarter. While the US growth rate in the third quarter was 3.4 percent and unemployment was the lowest level in five decades. But opinion polls show consumer confidence has been weakened by concerns about growth.
