Turkey is not coordinating with the Iraqi authorities its air operations against PKK positions in northern Iraq, said Sarkot Shamsuddin, a member of the House of Representatives.
"Nothing of this kind of air operations has been agreed with the current government," Shamsuddin said, adding that "the operations currently under way are based on agreements between Iraq and Turkey in 1980 that are still in force. On this subject, aerial bombardment could negatively affect our relations with Turkey, as well as creating a difficult situation for Turkish investors to operate freely in Iraq. "
According to the deputy, Turkey and Iraq have discussed this issue repeatedly, to no avail.
Turkey frequently launches air strikes on PKK posts in northern Iraq, especially in the Qandil mountain area, but the latest campaign, called Operation Claw, included artillery shelling and ground operations as well.
Turkey confirms its continued targeting of PKK positions and pursuing its members inside the country and in northern Iraq, pointing out that this comes: "in response to terrorist attacks carried out by PKK elements inside Turkey from time to time."
Turkey considers the PKK a terrorist organization and has fought it inside the country and in neighboring countries.
