The Ministry of Planning revealed, on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, that Iraq ranks 88th among the countries of the world, and 9th among the Arab countries, in terms of population growth rate, noting that the number of births in some years exceeded one million children.
A spokesman for the ministry, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said, "Iraq is witnessing a population growth that is high compared to other countries, but this rise has witnessed a decrease in its rates recently," noting that "the annual growth in Iraq was considered very high and has recently decreased to a high level."
Al-Hindawi pointed out that “there are 87 countries that are less developed in terms of population than Iraq, and therefore Iraq ranks 88th in the world, while at the Arab level, Iraq comes in the ninth degree,” adding that “the population growth in Iraq is now 2.6%, and thus it reaches a limit The lowest is 850,000 and the maximum is one million, but in some years we have exceeded the ceiling of one million births. In the year 2020 there were one million and 250,000 births, and in 2021 there were one million and 300,000 births, and we are still waiting for the final estimates of the number of births for the year 2022.
Al-Hindawi stated, “These estimates are based on statistics and they are internationally approved, and through them we rely on the existence of a base year, and if we divide these estimates at the level of males and females, we see that the scale tilts slightly in favor of males at 50.3%, while 49.7% for females, meaning that there is almost a balance ".
Al-Hindawi indicated that “at the level of age groups, children from 0 to 15 years constitute 27% of the population, then the category from 15 to 64 years constitutes about 65%, while the elderly constitute a small area for the population (64 years and over) about 3 %.”
As for the population in the governorates, Al-Hindawi stated that “the capital, Baghdad, occupies the first place at the governorate level in terms of population with about nine million people, then Nineveh comes in second place with more than four million people, and Basra comes in third place with more than three million people.”
He explained that “there is a convergence in the rest of the provinces, for example, the population of Sulaymaniyah is about two million and 300 thousand people, and Erbil has exceeded two million, and in Dhi Qar more than two million, as well as the province of Babil more than two million, then the rest of the provinces are less than two million,” adding that “ The least populous governorate is Muthanna, with approximately 950,000 people.
