Yesterday, Saturday, the Iraqi Bar Association, Ahlam Al-Lami, announced the formation of a committee to follow up on publishing content that is offensive to taste, or contrary to the law, by lawyers, and to submit a recommendation to the Association Council to take the appropriate decision by referring its promoters to the Disciplinary Board and removing their names from the lawyers’ rolls. This comes at a time when the Ministry of Interior stated that following up on “downward content owners” does not aim at restricting freedoms.
The Bar Association stated, in a statement received by (Al-Mada), that “it has been observed recently that some male or female lawyers display promotional contents that include false legal information, and appear in appearances that do not reflect the principles of honor and integrity.”
And the statement added, “The instructions for professional conduct prohibited the lawyer from any offensive publication using any of the methods of publicity, and the circulation of offensive phrases, obscene or disrespectful words that do not reflect the honor of the profession, or the circulation of pictures or situations that deviate from modesty and integrity, is considered by the offensive publication to be for him or for others.” Or publish false or incorrect legal information with the intent of misleading.
He pointed out, “Formation of a committee whose members will be named in an attached administrative order, whose tasks will be to follow up on any content that is offensive to taste or contrary to the law, and to submit recommendations to the Bar Council to take the appropriate decision by referring its promoters to the Disciplinary Council, removing their names from the lawyers’ rolls and depriving them of practicing the legal profession.”
And the statement went on, “This came based on the authority vested in us. We decided, in line with the principles of the legal profession, taking into account public taste, and in implementation of the provisions of the law and the instructions of professional conduct for the year 2016 in force.”
In addition, the director of relations and media in the ministry, Major General Saad Maan, said in an audio recording followed by (Al-Mada), that “the ministry will not lead any campaign against the poor or to restrict freedoms,” noting that “Iraq’s real gain is freedom of opinion, expression and democracy.”
Maan asked, “Has any media person, journalist, or honest or honorable writer been held accountable, and has anyone been muzzled?”, Pointing out, “We in the Ministry of Interior have long work experience and we did not come out of nowhere, whether our field experience, our academic degrees, citizens, the platform or Wide participation of all.
He stressed that "there will be no muzzling of mouths in Iraq, especially since the government today has accomplished many reforms," pointing out that "the campaign against bad content is not related to muzzling or fighting, but rather it is a national legal campaign aimed at reforming the values that some have tried to obliterate." ".
And recently, the Supreme Judicial Council announced that “the Court of Investigation of Al-Amarah confirmed the statements of the defendants, Abbas Hassan Al-Bahadli, nicknamed (Aboud Skaiba), Hassan Ali Al-Shammari, nicknamed (Madiha), Sajjad Qassem Zain, nicknamed (Attia), and Muhammad Laibi Lafta, nicknamed (Al-Bashush), after issuing judicial arrest warrants against them.
