Days after the conclusion of the Iraq Climate Conference, Basra Governorate will host a second conference, today, Wednesday, bearing the slogan (Modeling is a basic pillar in measuring environmental changes in Iraq).
The conference was organized by the Iraqi Society for Statistical Sciences at the grand ballroom at the Grand Millennium Hotel, and it is scheduled to be opened on behalf of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, Governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani.
A large number of researchers, academics, officials, businessmen and various societal groups are participating in this one-day conference, in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund, the University of Basra, Al-Rafidain University College and the Association of Private Banks.
The former Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers and Chairman of the Association organizing the conference, Dr. Mahdi Al-Alaq, told Al-Sabah: The conference is being held in Basra because it is a city that deserves attention due to the special economic and industrial activities it witnessed over the previous decades, in addition to the volume of oil and gas extraction operations and the petrochemical industries and their negative impact. In the environment of water, climate, soil and life. He added that the conference comes as a continuation of what concerns the Iraqi and international interest in Iraqi climate issues, which is (one of the five countries most affected by environmental changes in the world), noting that its sessions will witness the discussion of climate and environmental issues that were discussed in the Iraq Climate Conference. Al-Alaq indicated that the organizing committee received about 83 studies and research papers, 57 of which were accepted, noting that these researches were subject to scientific evaluation and provided a set of specific and positively influencing details in dealing with the negative effects of climate change in Basra, Iraq and the world.
He continued, that the association organizing the conference is affiliated under the umbrella of the Supreme Council of Iraqi Scientific Societies in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, indicating that the association worked to mature these studies and research, including the environmental impacts in the marsh areas, and it was documented in a special film shown during the conference.
The Secretary-General of the former Council of Ministers revealed the interest of the Association of Private Banks to hold a side working session on the various possibilities that banks will provide to address environmental impacts, headed by the Deputy Central Bank of Iraq to attract officials and banks in Basra.
