An Iraqi technical delegation to Turkey next month to discuss the water file

Iraq will send to Turkey, during the month of April, a specialized technical delegation to discuss the water file, which will be followed in the future by negotiations on increasing releases within the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in addition to forming an operations room and a crisis cell and adopting several effective measures to meet the needs of next summer.
The Minister of Resources, Awn Dhiab Abdullah, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: The visit of the Iraqi delegation to Turkey, which was useful and important, resulted in an increase in water releases from 200 to 400 m3 / s, with the aim of securing the weaning irrigation, which came after the farmers’ desire to increase the areas. Cultivated more than what was agreed upon, amounting at the time to two million and 500 thousand dunums, to now exceed six million dunums.
He added that he agreed after his meeting with the Ministers of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Affairs of the Turkish side, during his participation in the technical delegation that visited Turkey, to exchange technical delegations between the two parties to implement and activate the Memorandum of Understanding that was ratified in 2021, in which he pointed out that there are texts in it that serve Iraq.
Abdullah confirmed that a technical delegation will be sent to Turkey during next April to discuss the water file, and this procedure will be followed by subsequent steps to negotiate an increase in releases within the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, attributing the decrease in Euphrates imports for the current year to the lack of snow in its basin in Turkey, as 30 percent compared to the general average. In the same context, he revealed the formation of an operations room and a crisis cell to meet the needs of the coming summer, as well as the adoption of several measures in this regard, the most important of which is filling unlicensed fish lakes, and stopping fish farming within the authorized ones during the next summer season, warning that the country's water reserves are very limited to meet next summer season.
The Minister of Resources stated that the agricultural sector's need for water becomes at its lowest levels during the months of April and May and the transition from winter to summer cultivation, revealing that crop irrigation has been completed in some areas, and there is rain today and tomorrow for weaning irrigation, which enhances the possibility of storing water more due to rain in conjunction. With imports from Turkey, noting that the ministry is currently pumping water from the Tigris to the Euphrates River to boost its level, and in the event of a water shortage, the fixed reserves in Tharthar Lake will be used by pumping.
