{Local: Al Furat News} An advisor to the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, revealed that Iraq had abandoned the idea of establishing nuclear reactors to generate electric power.
Adviser to the Prime Minister for Construction and Services Affairs, Kamal Hussein Latif, said in a press statement regarding the possibility of Iraq benefiting from building peaceful nuclear reactors during the next stage, that "until now there is no national will for such an issue due to the presence of oil, renewable energy and associated gas, while some consider it a risk." .
He explained, "Some countries may agree to build these reactors in Iraq if they are approached, but the country has not sought that until now."

And the Prime Minister's advisor noted, "If Iraq prepares a plan until 2030 to invest in solar energy, wind and associated gas in an attempt to cover the increasing demand for the use of electric energy, it will not need to build nuclear reactors."
Latif revealed that the Prime Ministry approved two contracts presented by the Ministry of Electricity to establish two solar power plants in each of the Muthanna and Basra governorates, with a total capacity of 1,500 megawatts.
He explained, "This project, which is the largest in the Middle East, will be established within the next five years," noting that "the capacity of each of the two stations is 750 megawatts in one governorate."
Latif added, "The two stations cover a large amount of needs in both Muthanna and Basra," considering them "an excellent step to convert energy in Iraq into renewable energy by investing it more."
He pointed out that "Iraq is seeking to sign other projects and similar contracts, but it is still under study in the Ministry of Electricity, as it is the organizing body for the issue of using solar energy and organizing it to the provincial level."
