    August 27, 2013

Uzra Zeya, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, is leading a delegation to Brussels August 27-29, for annual human rights consultations between the United States and European Union.

Stavros Lambrinidis, Special Representative for Human Rights, and European External Action Service and Managing Director Mara Marinaki will lead the European Union delegation. The consultations allow the United States and European Union to share their respective views on the human rights situation in key third countries, as well as to coordinate positions in multilateral organizations. The consultations also reflect the EU’s expanding emphasis on human rights since the June 2012 establishment of its “Strategic Framework on Human Rights and Democracy.

In addition to consultations with EU counterparts, Acting Assistant Secretary Zeya will meet with representatives of leading European human rights and civil society organizations.
