    [ltr]The Pentagon's weapons procurement official has expressed keenness to speed up foreign military sales to allies and increase financial profits for US arms companies.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"Foreign military sales are crucial for a number of reasons, including building capacity for partnership, a real tool for us in international relations," said Ellen Lord, the Department of Defense's Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"When I was in the industry and what I hear from the industry now is that they want to see things move more quickly," Lourd told reporters at the Pentagon. "She also wants to reduce the time it takes to complete the arms purchase by half.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The Pentagon usually takes months, often years to make decisions on procurement, especially for large arms programs.[/ltr]
    [ltr]There are two main ways in which foreign governments can buy weapons from US companies. The first is direct commercial sales, negotiated between a government and a company, and foreign military sales, where a foreign government contacts a Defense Department official at the US embassy in its capital, both of which require US administration approval.[/ltr]
    [ltr]US arms exports increased by more than 50 percent under former President Barack Obama, and this upward trend is continuing with current President Donald Trump.[/ltr]
