The newspaper "New York Times" in a report, revealed by the team, Ahmed Shafiq, that under house arrest, in the UAE, noting that these steps against him aims to prevent him from re-running for the presidency of Egypt, against Abdel Fattah Sisi in the upcoming elections.
According to the US newspaper report, the UAE began to put Shafiq under house arrest a week ago, confirming Shafiq's accusations to the UAE.
Shafiq, a former Air Force general, said Wednesday that UAE leaders prevented him from leaving their country and sought to prevent him from running for president in Egypt.
The newspaper quoted Shafiq lawyer Dina Adly as saying that the UAE authorities had asked him to cancel his trip abroad and that "running for president is a bad idea."
Lawyer Adly said her client, Shafiq, had been under house arrest since 3:00 am on Friday.
"Now they (the UAE authorities) have to let him go, as a result of the reaction generated by the video, so this is good," she said.
"This is probably the second time in less than a month that a Gulf state has been trying to influence the affairs of one of its neighbors after the resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri during a forced and possible stay in Saudi Arabia," the paper said.
This comes at a time when Sisi is failing in Egypt's weak economy and fighting the government for maintaining public security, amid several attacks that have drawn criticism of the security level in the country.
The newspaper said that "the Egyptian government may find other ways to thwart the nomination of Shafiq."
And mentioned what happened in the 2012 elections, when he left Egypt after losing the presidential race, and the judiciary was investigating corruption charges against him relating to the term of his tenure as Minister of Civil Aviation, which he held for ten years since 2001, and can revive these charges to deter him from returning to Egypt, or weakening the competitiveness of the presidential race.
The newspaper pointed out that Shafiq did not challenge the Sisi and his election as president in 2014. Although observers reported that the elections at the time did not comply with international standards, and leaked audio recording when Shafiq expected the race to be a "farce."
"It will be a comedy show," he said of the election.
According to the newspaper, "there are indications that the Egyptian security services may seek to confront the rival Sisi."
Another potential candidate who has announced his intention to enter the presidential race is Khalid Ali, a human rights lawyer with little chance of success. Finished
